Regionsbeschreibung

Das Projektgebiet umfasst den Bregenzerwald mit dem Einzugsgebiet der Bregenzerach südöstlich von Bregenz bis an den Hochtannbergpass. Mit einer Moorfläche von ca. 2.390 ha zählt der Bregenzerwald zu den moorreichsten Regionen Österreichs. Er beherbergt eine hohe Vielfalt an Niedermoor-Lebensräumen kalkreicher bis saurer Prägung, Übergangs- und Hochmoore. Darunter sind zahlreiche Moore von nationaler und internationaler Bedeutung.

Beeinträchtigungen und Probleme

Entwässerung: für u. a. die Befahrbarkeit der bewirtschafteten (überwiegend) Hangmoore
Randeffekte: seitlicher Nährstoffeintrag bzw. Verkleinerung des hydrologischen Einzugsgebietes durch Infrastruktur
Überweidung: teilweise (oft an Engstellen) sind die beweideten Moore der Hochlagen stark zertreten
Nutzungsaufgabe: sekundäre Moorstandorte werden nicht mehr genutzt und bewalden sich im Zuge der Sukzession

Special features of the moor

The project area covers the Bregenzerwald, including the catchment area of the Bregenzerach, stretching south-east of Bregenz to the Hochtannberg Pass. With a total area of approximately 2,390 ha of peatland, the Bregenzerwald is one of the regions with the highest concentration of peatland in Austria. It is home to a wide variety of mires ranging from alkaline to acidic fens, as well as transition mires and raised bogs. These include numerous mires of national and international importance.

Threats and pressures

Drainage: to ensure accessibility to the managed peatlands
Edge effects: lateral nutrient input or reduction of the hydrological catchment area due to infrastructure
Overgrazing: in some places (often at bottlenecks), the grazed high-altitude peatlands are heavily trampled
Abandonment of use: secondary peatlands are no longer used and are becoming overgrown with trees as part of the succession process
