Together with Vorarlberg’s Provincial Governor Barbara Schöbi-Fink, Climate and Nature Conservation Councillor Daniel Zadra and representatives of the neighboring communities of Hard, Fußach, Gaißau and Höchst, the Federal President immersed himself in the unique world of mires. “Mires are fascinating and we urgently need them in the future. Those who protect mires also protect us humans,” emphasized the head of state during his visit.
First, project manager Christiane Machold gave a presentation on the importance of mires and how AMooRe will contribute to their preservation and improvement. The lead project developer of the “Diversity Rhine Delta” project then introduced the excursion before setting off for Vorarlberg’s largest peatland area.
The nature reserve consists of two thirds water and one third land, and around 200 hectares are covered with litter meadows. In the 1950s, many areas here were lost to nature due to drainage. As part of AMooRe, the area is now to be rewetted, taking all interest groups into account.
The President was particularly impressed by the cross-municipal, cross-state and cross-sectoral cooperation. The visit was a great pleasure for all those present and showed their appreciation for Austria’s mires and the LIFE project.
The Federal President’s conclusion: “Looks good!”
